Introducing the new Youth Mayor

Young people from across Southend have chosen their new Youth Mayor for 2011/2012 – Jake Inwood.

Delighted Jake, 16, a student at Southend High School for Boys, said: “I feel amazing! It will be one of the best experiences of my life and I can’t wait to start helping the youth of Southend.”

Meanwhile, Brontea Boulton, also 16, a student at St Bernards High School, Westcliff, won the role of Deputy Youth Mayor.

She said: “I am pleased with my role and I want to work hard to improve things for the young people of Southend.”

The duo were elected after 3,200 young people from throughout the borough voted in the election.

They were ceremonially received into their new roles by the Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor Ann Holland, at a meeting of the Southend Youth Council on Wednesday.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Children and Learning, Councillor Roger Hadley, said: “Many congratulations to Jake and Brontea. I wish them every success as they take up their new duties.

“I would also like to say a special thank you to all the young people in Southend aged between 13 and 19 who took the trouble to vote for them.

“As we welcome Jake and Brontea to these important roles, we must at the same time applaud the excellent achievements of our outgoing Youth Mayor and Deputy, Adam Connolly and Alex Bright, who have had a most successful year in office.”
