Southend Council has announced that 14,000 infant, primary and special school children will be the recipients of a special commemorative sovereign medal on a red white and blue ribbon to mark an occasion that deserves its place in history.
Some of our little ones are unlikely to appreciate the significance of the Queen's Jubilee as it happens, but this memento will serve as a reminder that they were party to this historic event.
Other plans in the pipeline include several free concerts at the Priory Park Bandstand from Saturday 2nd June (Tilbury Brass Academy) Sunday 3rd (Southend Band) Monday 4th (Tequila Swing) to Tuesday 5th June (Becontree Brass Band). The three brass bands' repertoire will obviously include some rousing Jubilee themed music, inspiring much flag waving and British pride! Concerts are free to attend and there is some seating available and limited parking so get there in plenty of time. All concerts run from 3pm to 5pm
Also at the concerts on the 2nd and 3rd June will be local artist Debbie Hadley who will be running free drop-in art workshops. Based on the theme of 'An English Tea Party' the emphasis will naturally be on themed art and craftwork with a distinct British flavour, enabling you to make your own flag to raise in triumph at the first strains of Land of Hope and Glory!
The Jubilee Cricket Festival runs from June 1st to the 5th. A number of events are planned at Garon Park including CB40 matches, Unicorns -v- Sussex on 3rd June and Unicorns -v- Kent on the 5th. There will also be a Trevor Bailey themed benefit for long serving Essex CCC Graham Napier.
Central Museum will be hosting a day of Jubilee Activities including trails, quizzes and crafts from 10am til 4pm on the 6th to 8th June. Everybody welcome and entry is free.
Southend is buzzing with excitement and is setting out to provide something to suit everybody. If you have a Jubilee event planned, be sure to contact thebestof Southend and add it to our Events listings so nobody misses out on the fun!
