Active encouragement for older people in Southend

Southend’s senior citizens are being urged to make the most of the activities on offer during Older Peoples’ Month.

This year the national theme for the event is all about emphasising the benefits of getting and staying active in later life.

A whole host of events have been organised across Southend including fitness classes, carers support groups, internet classes, discovery sessions at the library and a first aid course.

An Older Peoples Day celebration organised by Southend Older People’s Assembly will take place this Saturday (15th October) at Victoria Shopping Centre from 10am to 4pm.

A variety of voluntary organisations and services will be represented at the drop-in event and the Worshipful the Mayor of Southend, Councillor David Norman, will be present from 11am to noon.

The event also sees the launch of a mobility improvement project called SAMERU which aims to help older people to influence safety and mobility issues in the town.

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council’s Executive Councillor for Adult Social Care, Health and Housing, Councillor Lesley Salter, said: “Older Peoples’ Month focuses on celebrating the many things to enjoy in later life.

“In line with the national agenda to encourage people to get fit and stay fit a wide range of activities are taking place in Southend throughout October and into November.

“The events brochure lists many useful details which we hope will be helpful to people at various ages and stages of their later life.”
