History will be brought to life during the 12th and 13th September at Smedley Hydro in Birkdale, when the building will be open to the public. See events page for full details
The building on Trafalgar Road was a college for young gentlemen and Hydropathic Establishment, before being requisitioned by the government at the outbreak of the Second World War. It now supports the work of The General Register Office for England and Wales and The National Health Service Information Centre.
Staff are also calling for help to trace the very earliest history of the building.
Despite attempts, the history of the building has only been traced back to the mid 19th Century during which time it was known as Birkdale College. The actual date when the building was first built is still unknown.
