The El Pais newspaper reported that the 52 cows had pressed themselves against a metal wire fence during a thunderstorm - unfortunately the fence scored a direct hit from the lightning, and all of the cows were killed. A photograph released by the San Jose Police Department shows the black and brown cows lying dead in a row. The newspaper went on to say that experts said cows often crowd around fences during bad weather, seeking protection; vets at the scene confirmed the cause of death.
