A Prairie Dog has been found eating sugar beet at a farm in Fen Road, Rippingdale on Tuesday. The eight inch high mammal is a native of America and is not ususally found in the wild here. RSPCA think that it must have escaped from captivity. the little creature is being looked after at the RSPCA Ferret Rescue centre in Grimsthorpe, and is in quite poor condition, weighing only 1/3 of his ideal body weight. He also has teeth problems , but is expected to improve.
The RSPCA is trying to trace the owner but if they cannot be found, the prairie dog will go to live in Oxfordshire as part of a colony with other members of the species.
If you know where the prairie dog came please contact the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.
