Mothering Sunday is here again with the spring

Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday in Lent and it's what other countries (and we are increasingly) call Mother's Day.

It's the day when we traditionally give respect to our mothers with small gifts and treats. In times gone by, it was the day that was given off by employers for their workers to go home and see their mothers, and the traditional gift would have been a posy of spring flowers such as violets.

These days, of course, we have a much wider range of gifts to show our appreciation.

Flowers are always a good idea, and Sue's Flower House in St Mary's Street will be more than happy to help you with ideas.

Mums always appreciate being taken out for a meal, because it means they don't have to cook! Stamford is spoiled for choice when it comes to places for Sunday Lunch. In town there's always The Crown Hotel, The Garden House, and of course, The George. If you fancy eating out of town, then why not try The Royal Oak in Duddington, or slightly further afield in Rutland,  Barnsdale Hall or Barnsdale Lodge Hotel, both on the shores of Rutland Water.

If you're looking for something unique, then there's a Craft Fayre at Top Lodge, Fineshade Woods on Saturday 7th, just in time for Mother's Day.
