I recently went to a party with my husband where there were four other couples. Various hand shakes took place, although no-one shook hands with their own partner, or themselves, and nobody shook anyone's hand more than once.

Boringly I asked everyone afterwards how many hands they'd shaken - and everyone gave a different answer. How many hands did my husband shake?

Later, Lord Snooty showed us around the Baronial Hall, and came to one portrait where he posed the following old riddle "Brothers and sisters have I none, but that man's father is my father's son"

Who was he showing a portrait of?

1. With five married couples, nobody shook more than 8 hands. So if 9 people each shake a different number of hands, the numbers must be 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8. The person who shook 8 hands has to be married to whoever shook no hands (otherwise he would have shaken only 7) So the one who shook 7 hands has to be married to the one who shook 2 and the the one who shook 5 is with the one who shook three. The only one left, who shook 4 hands, is my husband. (OK I don't get it either but I'm assured it's the answer!)

And it was Lord Snooty's son in the portrait
