The pedestrian swing bridge was craned into position at Ebley Mill in mid-May.

Provision of the pedestrian foot bridge was a condition of the planning consent granted to the developer of the Ebley Wharf complex of homes and retail premises. The bridge was fabricated in Portugal and delivered to site in May. The 6.9 tonnes steel swing bridge was positioned by Ellis Crane Hire of Gloucester. A relieved Roland Tanner, representing the developers, said “The good news is… it fits!”

Dave Marshall of Stroud District Council explains… “The bridge replaces the old fixed access road that blocked the canal at this point. The installation of a hand operated swingbridge is another significant step forward in improving access for all to the canal tow path. When it is fully commissioned and operational it will also recreate good access to the Council offices and, of course, to the Cotswold Canals Trust boat trip operation operating from here."

An official opening on a date in June will be announced as the development of Ebley Wharf nears completion.
