Beatifully renovated, historic pub, located off the Green in Hartest. Good car parking. The gents toilets were the best I have ever seen in a pub.
Staff were friendly & attentive, even to a stranger. The restaurant area is off the open-plan bar area, but you can eat anywhere. There is also an extensive garden & patio area. The atmosphere is of an village local, with a mixed clientele of couples, families etc.
The food was excellent standard, with several specials. The rabbit platter was delicious. As you would expect from this pub group, a great selection of beers.

Having not been to eat at the Crown for many years, now we are 'after children' we thought we'd revisit some old haunts to sample what they have to offer. This one was a very pleasant surprise! It has been completely re-vamped and was unrecognizable inside from the last time we were there - very open and spacious yet managing to retain a homely feel. There was an open fire burning in the fire place; people sitting at tables eating; people sitting round the bar chatting; and a general air of bonhomie. From the moment we walked in and ordered a drink at the bar, we were made to feel welcome and the staff went out of their way to be friendly, helpful and courteous without being pushy - in particular, Jessica and Honey??? who somehow managed to strike a balance between making us feel like old friends without being too familiar. Having been shown to our table, we chose our food from an interesting menu with some slightly unusual dishes as well as more familiar ones, and we weren't disappointed. One of us had mussels and the other goats cheese and fig salad to start. We then couldn't decide between featherblade steak and Barnsely chop cooked on the open fire, so opted to have one each which we shared. I can honestly say they were both superb and if asked again, I wouldn't be able to choose. All in all, it was a very pleasant evening, with excellent food and excellent service.

Good food and excellent beers, at a reasonable price. Good selection of food on offer. Staff coped well despite the local flooding that day.

Read some of the reviews on here which to be fair are harsh. Took my family here for an afternoon Sunday lunch yesterday and have to say it was top food with excellent service. The manager was welcoming on arrival and the Roast Beef was of high quality and complimented with all the trimings. My children enjoyed real chicken breast goujons again decent food which my kids enjoyed. Credit to the staff here, thank you for the service and welcome and despite some of the reviews before this pub is well worth a visit.

Thursday night dinner for 3. As usual the food, wine and service was very good.
Good as a pub and great as a restaurant. What more can we say...
We will be back soon.

We visited here for a Friday night dinner with friends. I had not been since the refurbishment and was pleasantly surprised. The pub retains it's bar area which is vital for what is essentially a pub on the village green. The food was good, freshly cooked fare of good quality. Wines were reasonably priced and also available was a selection of beers and lager. What's not to like?
I have visited the sister pubs and you must say, they know what they are doing. So all in all a very pleasant experience which we will repeat!

Would like to thank the chef and staff for a fantastic night. The food was excellent, service absolutely brilliant. They pulled out all the stops to make it a perfect evening. Can't complain about a thing. Great team who all worked well together and looked after our guests. We were paid many compliments and thanked for a wonderful party by our guests so this in turn should be conveyed to the Crown for putting on such a good show. Well done and many thanks again.

Visited on Sunday 7 Sept and Thurs 11 Sept. Food excellent and good value. Great choice menu so something for everyone and more than happy to accommodate special requests. Good range of beers, wines and spirits. Staff very friendly and helpful on both visits. Darren and his staff are doing a great job.

Food was very good as was the ambience. However, the service was quite slow for a simple Sunday lunch and there is a need for more pro-active management of the staff and some training e.g. we were asked if we wanted plates for the warm bread etc... Good be very good if the service is improved

Took friends for a meal on a Friday evening. Sat down at 7.15 but no service for 20 minutes.
When our order was finally taken it took 45 minutes during which time we reminded the waitress that we had been waiting a long time. The food when it came was very good apart from my friends chips which were clearly the end of a batch as they were tiny and hard. We mentioned it to the waitress when she cleared the plates but no apology.Didn't leave a tip but did explain why we were doing so.
Will go back again and hope they have sorted out the waiting problem.

We have been a couple of times and enjoyed both. It can get very busy which puts a strain of the service but, overall, the food, atmosphere and experience have always been very good. We look forward to going again.

Ate at the crown again a couple of weeks ago on a busy Saturday lunch, Staff very welcoming and friendly as always even though it seemed very busy, food came out after about 15 minutes, i had the pulled pork pie again as i enjoyed it so much last time, again it was delicious and filling, my partner had the Duck Caeser salad which again was delicious and very filling, she even left some so i got to try, we had the sharing pudding board for dessert again no complaints, we left feeling very happy and full, will be returning again soon.

Nicely situated Pub in this Suffolk Village, usual soft neutral interior, sea grass floors etc. of the bistroised pub and a large garden at the back..
I popped in on a Sunday evening for a bite to eat, started with some whitebait which were served in a small tin bucket as a little taster rather than a starter which simply means it was a smaller portion. This was followed by the chicken Caesar salad, coffee and a Brandy.
Whitebait was good, nice and crisp. The Chicken Caesar salad was a little disappointing, I think it was about £11 but when it arrived I admit to being somewhat disappointed by the portion size a few bits of chicken, crotons and a lettuce for £11.00, what was there was nicely done but this dish must provide a healthy profit to the owners. Had a bit of fun with the waiter who hadn't a clue about drinks or the various coffees on the menu.
In conclusion then my meal was perfectly adequate but not one of life's most notable moments and I was left with a feeling that whilst I had not exactly been ripped off that I had overpaid for the meal. In other respects a pleasant pub some what spoiled by the ubiquitous Essex Man and friends " Giving it large" in the corner.

Met family for lunch, I don't think The Crown has any pretensions to being a gastro pub, but it is a very pleasant village pub (one of a chain of 3 or 4). The food was decent not exceptional but worth a visit and I'd definitely go again.
We had the Suffolk ham with egg and chips, Haddock and chips, a fish-finger sandwich and the dry aged steak burger and everyone agreed it was very good, the girl who took the order just memorised everything, she was also pleasant enough. The micro brewery ales were lovely (I preferred the lighter ale), the barman knew what he was talking about and offered my brother a taste.
The interior, clean and well looked after; also the loos were clean and nicely decorated. The garden was well tended with a large lawn and a 'stream' (or trickle) at the bottom where we discovered frogs. There's children's play equipment that looks to be quite new.
All in all The Crown is situated in lovely surroundings; in a beautiful village and the little church next door ' All Saints is well worth a visit - we met a very nice gentleman who was looking after it that day.

The Crown used to be an old favourite of ours, but over the last few years has been through some real ups and downs, (more downs than ups).
At last it has been given a sympathetically modern and stylish make over, including the garden, which is spacious and has a fun, safe play area for kids.
I can highly recommend the warm honey bread as something to nibble while you order....it comes served warm on a wooden platter in a brown bag and just oozes flavour and comfort!
Also to be recommended are the Sea Trout and the Rib Eye as mains and the black pudding scotch egg starter.
The owners also own the Cadogan Arms beyond Bury and a couple of other pubs and are soon bringing their own micro brewery online, which should be a welcome addition, especially in time for autumnal/winter open fires etc.
It is nice to see new life being breathed back into this favourite old haunt.

Had lunch here today. The location is rural & quiet, great garden for children. The staff were friendly professional. Don't expect large portions. I had duck caeser salad, basically crispy lettuce, half a dozen pieces of shredded duck & a sprinkling of Parmesan cheese. I felt it was way over priced at £10.50 for what was actually in the bowl.

I have started going here again every two or three months as I appreciate the good service, helpful time and the ever-changing menus.
The chef does provide interesting experiences for vegetarians. This time I ate a great broccoli, blue cheese and onion tart. It was made with filo pastry and looked like a flower on the plate - so pretty. It was served with a great tomato and cannellini bean salad.

Several of us elderly retired gents who travel extensively to enjoy our pensions are pleased to report that the Crown represents all that is good about eating out. Really good beer, good choice of food, well cooked and presented; and very pleasant staff.

Home brewed beer, really good food freshly prepared, good for families and coupes. Large garden with play area. Stream at the bottom of the garden and a warning sign about this for parents

I was taken here by a friend. It was our second visit and we were delighted again. We knew that the setting was gorgeous and there was outside seating but most importantly the food was excellent again. Great pub food with a twist and four notches up from standard pub grub.

The village is stunning, and this renovation compliments it well. A big place, with huge gardens, right next to the church.. You have to know it's there though, as it's easy to miss. Six of us have a lovely evening meal, everything well presented and very tasty. No-one had a bad word to say and my pulled pork pie was brilliant. Puds were good too, and all home made. Try the English wine, from the local vineyard, it's worth it!
Three courses with wine for £40 a head. Not bad at all for that quality.

We visited the Crown on consecutive weekends and saw two sides of the service. On both occasions the food was excellent and the staff were very friendly. On our first visit the service was fine, a little slow maybe, but we really couldn't complain. The following weekend we were told that there would be a wait for the food as they were busy in the kitchen. This was no problem as it was a nice day and there is a great play area for kids outside and we were in no hurry. We eventually got our food 2 hours after ordering (due to the order getting lost) and when it came to paying, no discount was offered until my wife asked. If it hadn't been for the good experience of our first visit, this would have put us off returning, but the great food and overall impression of this lovely pub means that we will definitely give it another try.
