Lockdown has been a challenging time for us all but particularly difficult for older people, many of whom have been in isolation since the start of March.
It was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on 15th June 2020. A day when the world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering experienced by too many of our older people. Hourglass is the only UK-wide charity dedicated to calling time on the harm, abuse and exploitation of older people. Our campaign for safer ageing seeks to empower older people to live free from abuse and celebrate the importance and influence older people have in shaping our lives.
We chose to launch Silver Superheroes on this year’s WEAAD; an exclusive campaign to encourage everyone to celebrate older friends and family. We want to hear your tributes to your own amazing Silver Superhero or share your memories and stories about the influence a grandparent, aunt, uncle, cousin or an older friend has had on your life. Maybe you’re missing your granddad, mum or another loved one during the lockdown. Maybe you just want to remind them how special they are to you. This is your opportunity to tell them they’re loved, they’re missed and they’re a superhero.
We’re delighted some familiar faces are getting involved and sharing with us their own tributes. Actor and star of Celebs Go Dating Tom Read Wilson sent us this heart-warming tribute to his grandma and why she has been so important in shaping his life.
You can watch it HERE
We would love to hear your own tributes, memories and messages to share on social media. Let’s remind everyone how important our older people are and recognise our older people as the heroes they truly are.
Please email us with your videos or even just a photo, explaining why the person is special to you, any message you’d like them to know.

Hello! I'm Penny from thebestof Sudbury, shouting about the best local businesses from Hadleigh through the Clare. When I'm not doing that, you'll find me knitting socks or tending to my 6 chickens
