Software development firm Ficode Technologies Limited have created a mobile app and website to connect volunteers to help people in self-isolation amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

The app, which is free to download, is a platform for those in need to search for local volunteers in their area. A map is embedded into the app so self-isolated people are able to view volunteers in their area, as well as contact volunteers directly. Individuals can sign up to the app as volunteers in a matter of seconds.

The app is currently being used in the UK and Norway, with more than 250 volunteers signing up in the last week

Ficode is offering use of the app free to food banks, charities or local authorities to manage their volunteers.

More than 250 people have signed up to the app in the last week.

Gurmeet Singla (pictured), owner and founder of Sutton Coldfield-based Ficode, said: “We tried to link those who wish to volunteer with those who may need some help, such as being in self-isolation,  are vulnerable  or  affected with Covid-19. This platform enables anyone to seek help and search for volunteers.

“The platform only asks for name and postcode (not full address) to register as a volunteer and choose what help they can offer to affected people. Affected people are able to find and get help by contacting nearby volunteers based on just postcode.

“The most common service being used is dropping off grocery shopping, followed by contacts from London residents requesting volunteers to help with weekly shopping for their parents.

“They are also participating in Royal Sutton Indians’ effort to provide food to our frontline NHS workers.”
