John Taylor Hospice is appealing for businesses across Birmingham and Sutton Coldfield to help fund support groups for bereaved children.

The Hope and Healing Appeal aims to raise £10,000 to set up children’s counselling and art therapy groups to support grieving youngsters through one of the toughest and loneliest times in their lives.

Katie Mitchell, head of fundraising at John Taylor Hospice, explained: “Together we have raised nearly £8,000 for the Hope and Healing Appeal and have received many kind donations which we’re incredibly grateful for.

"Many people have also shared their personal experiences with us and we know, following the coronavirus crisis, bereavement support services like this have never been more in demand.”

Earlier this year, the Birmingham-based hospice ran pilot art therapy and counselling sessions for a small group of children aged 8-11.

And the feedback from families taking part showed that the service was a lifeline – and should be continued so that more children have the chance to open up, express their feelings and realise they are not alone.

Now John Taylor Hospice is asking local businesses to help fund these groups by holding a sponsored event with a rainbow theme.

Katie added: “We’d love for local businesses to be a part of something special and get behind us in launching this new service to help children in our communities.

"You could incorporate the rainbow theme of the appeal into your working day as a sponsored event; maybe bring a splash of colour to your next team meeting by wearing fancy dress or serve up rainbow cakes or treats for your colleagues in return for a donation?

"Whatever your show of support is, you’ll be helping children find hope for happier times and to find the strength to cope with fear and loss.”
