One of UK’s largest further education colleges is supporting Black History Month by enabling their students and staff to express why ‘reclaiming narratives’ is important.

Throughout October, BMet is giving a voice to its African Caribbean Community across its James Watt, Matthew Boulton and Sutton Coldfield Colleges – through its internal and external communication channels.

This year’s ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ theme for Black History Month marks a significant shift towards recognising and correcting the narratives of Black history and culture.

The theme focuses on a commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage.

BMet is supporting Black History Month by putting together a series of activities taking place throughout the month. A key highlight is the creation of a variety of videos to bring the important subject to life.

Videos will be specially designed to showcase the opinions of students and staff which not only include personal insights, but also group discussions.

Pat Carvalho, principal and CEO at BMet is also being captured on video highlighting the importance of this year’s theme.

She said: “We are committed to delving deeper into the theme.

“Our BMet platforms, will serve as a hub for sharing insights, stories, and historical retrospectives that resonate with the ethos of ‘Reclaiming Narratives.’

“Through our communication channels, we aim to foster a space where the rich tapestry of Black history is celebrated and revered.

“The journey of reclaiming narratives is not just a theme for Black History Month, it’s a movement towards acknowledging and appreciating the myriad contributions of Black people throughout history. I encourage people to delve into this month to find out more.

“The BMet content could be a good starting point.”
