Former MP Lord Norman Fowler has been appointed to the ceremonial role following a meeting of the Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council.
This ceremonial title, which has been bestowed on distinguished servants of the Royal Town for nearly 500 years, has been resurrected on the recommendation of mayor Cllr John Perks and Town Council leader Cllr Simon Ward.
Having served as MP for Sutton Coldfield for over from 1974 to 2001, Lord Fowler’s appointment is in recognition of his distinguished public service.
Lord Fowler served in Cabinet roles as Secretaries of State for Transport, Health and Social Security and Employment and is highly regarded for his campaigning work around equal rights.
The position of High Steward was originally granted to the Royal Town of Sutton Coldfield by King Henry VIII in 1578, under the Royal Charter which also formed the first Town Council for the Royal Town.
The last High Steward, Lord Leigh was appointed in 1951 and the role was suspended when the Borough Council of Sutton Coldfield was disbanded and Sutton Coldfield became part of the metropolitan district of Birmingham in 1974.
Cllr John Perks, the Town Mayor said: “I am delighted to confirm the reinstatement of the role of High Steward. Lord Fowler’s appointment marks a significant milestone in the history of our Royal Town and celebrates the legacy of this honorary position.
“The Rt. Hon. the Lord Fowler did a tremendous job in serving the residents of Sutton Coldfield for 27 years and is truly deserving of this prestigious title.
“I am thrilled, along with my fellow Councillors to welcome Lord Fowler to his new appointment. “
Lord Fowler’s inauguration as High Steward will take place as part of the Civic Sunday Service taking place at 2pm on Sunday 9 June 2024 at Holy Trinity (CE) Church, Mill Street, Sutton Coldfield.
The service is open to the community.
