Andrew Mitchell MP has welcomed the news that work on HS2 can proceed.
The announcement follows lobbying from Andrew and fellow Midlands MPs alongside West Midlands Mayor Andy Street.
During a statement in the House of Commons on Tuesday the Prime Minister announced that after careful consideration HS2 will be allowed to proceed. Confirming support for the project, the Prime Minister stated that the Government will install discipline and financial order to the project with a newly-dedicated HS2 minister.
The announcement comes alongside a £5 billion Local Transport Package of new funding to transform buses, bikes and roads which will level up connectivity across the whole country and especially throughout the West Midlands.
Andrew spoke during the Prime Minister’s Statement welcoming the Prime Minister’s commitment and paying tribute to the leadership of West Midlands Mayor Andy Street.
Andrew Mitchell said: “I am delighted that the Prime Minister has given the go-ahead for HS2 to proceed. The project will help transform our region. It will increase capacity on our rail network, improving connectivity within – and between - our cities, and generate jobs and economic growth. It will also provide a real boost to British engineering during the construction phase. HS2 will cut pollution and help us work towards Net Zero emissions by cutting car journeys and ensuring that we can move more freight via our railways.”
