Judges from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) visited Sutton Coldfield to assess the town’s entry into the Heart of England in Bloom competition.

Representatives from the RHS were taken on a tour of Sutton Coldfield and shown the various displays, projects and initiatives that have been installed and delivered over recent months.

Judges viewed planting at the Harvest Fields Centre and toured a community allotment plot, Hill Hook Nature Reserve, The ReUsers Centre, Jones Wood and Sutton Park.

Organised by Sutton Coldfield Town Council with support from volunteers, community groups, schools, churches and businesses, Sutton Coldfield in Bloom is a year round initiative involving floral displays, community engagement and competitions.

The streets of Sutton Coldfield have been filled with colour and creativity with over 500 flowers hanging baskets, barrier baskets and spectacular tiered planting displays.

The town is a blaze of colour this summer and along with 10,000m2 wildflower planting, judges were greeted with a great big horticultural hello along their tour.

Businesses also got involved by decorating shop fronts and showing support to the Sutton Coldfield in Bloom project.

Judges received a 30-page portfolio which shows off all the good work that goes on all year with volunteers both for Sutton Coldfield in Bloom and other projects carried out by Friends of Groups, allotment holders, churches and schools.

Town mayor Cllr Jan Cairns said: “There has always been togetherness and a community spirit here in Sutton Coldfield which has shone through today with everyone coming together to help make the town’s entry an unforgettable one.”

Results will be announced mid- September.
