A leading grammar school in Sutton Coldfield has revealed plans for a major upgrade of its facilities as it approaches its 500th anniversary in 2027.

Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School has been placed as a top-50 state school by the Sunday Times Parent Power League every year since 2013, with academic performance among the best schools nationally.
Increases in lower school numbers, however, together with exponential growth in subjects such as Computer Science and Economics and an ambition to reach more students from disadvantaged backgrounds, set against a backdrop of tired and out-dated (in some cases centuries-old) facilities have brought a number of challenges to the School, which urgently need to be addressed.
Upgrade plans were revealed at an exclusive event for business leaders at Moor Hall Hotel and Spa.
Head teacher Dominic Robson said: ”As we approach our 500th anniversary, we are taking this opportunity to bring our physical environment up to the same level of excellence as the education we deliver.
"I strongly believe in the transformative power of education and this comprehensive overhaul of our estate will enable us to continue our mission to promote social mobility and life opportunities for students in an area that is ranked the seventh most deprived in the UK.
“Central to our plans is the creation of a new Learning Resource Centre which will deliver the specialist facilities we need and allow us to open our Sixth Form to more talented young people regardless of their backgrounds, at the same time freeing up tired spaces for refurbishment.”
The school holds immense significance within the region’s economic landscape as affirmed by local business leader and Chamber committee member, Clive Poole, who said: “Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School is a major contributor to Sutton Coldfield’s prosperity, making our town an attractive place to live and do business. It has a centuries-long reputation for delivering excellence in education and an innovative approach to ensuring that young people leave equipped with the skills they need to thrive in life after school, whether in further education or in the workplace.
“As an alumnus of the School and a member of its Corporate Partners Scheme, I have first-hand experience of an excellent well-rounded education and the work the School is doing with businesses to enhance the curriculum, bringing real-world relevance to it.
“These new facilities will not only benefit the School’s students, but will be available out of school hours for badly-needed community use.”
