I joined the team in November 2017 and at the time I had very little office and legal experience, having only worked voluntarily at the Birmingham Citizens Advice Bureau. My work experience consisted of retail and customer service roles. So, when the position at Pickford Solicitors presented itself, I knew I had to apply.
Having completed a law degree and then more recently the LPC, I was unsure of what field within the legal sector (which is shockingly vast) I wanted to specialise in. The role at Pickford’s was to assist Jas Singh, corporate specialist, as a Corporate Paralegal, as a Transaction Manager.
The role of a Transaction Manager was completely new to me, but from the beginning I knew this was the opportunity of a life time and the prefect foundation for me to develop my legal career.
The range of matters the corporate team covered, surprised me. From smaller things such as services contracts, up to the complete process of the sale or purchase of a Company.
I started with some of the smaller tasks, such as ensuring all files were compliant for the businesses file opening procedures. I quickly moved on to drafting short corporate documents, such as board minutes and completing Companies House forms.
As I progressed, I was given the opportunity to assist with some of the more complex matters such as share reorganisations and transfers. This offered the perfect foundation, as I continued to forge ahead to work on some of the larger transactions, which generally involved the sale and acquisition of businesses that operate in the health care sector.
Looking forward, now as Trainee solicitor, I am hoping to broaden my skill set and continue to gather experience in the Corporate department, and then move in to two other departments that Pickford’s offers, which is ever expanding, but currently includes Conveyancing, Commercial Property and Family Law. All guaranteed to offer a vastly different range of transactional matters and experiences.
