Hundreds of enthusiastic cyclists took to the roads on Sunday 7th May, using their pedal power to help raise funds for St Giles Hospice at their annual Cycle Spring event.
St Giles’ Whittington site was a hub of activity on the day of the event, as cyclists began and finished their routes from the hospice, who provide care for local people, and their loved ones, living with a terminal illness.
Despite the grey weather, 380 riders set off on one of three available routes of 23, 40 or 80 miles. The selection of different routes ensured that riders of varying ages and abilities were welcome.
Each route offered riders a chance to take in some breath-taking rural views, whilst cycling through beautiful parts of the Staffordshire and Leicestershire countryside.
Joining the energetic fundraisers on two wheels this year were St Giles’ own Rob Vickers, Chair, and Andrew Harkness, Chief Executive Officer. Rob and Andrew successfully completed the 40-mile route this year, after both taking part in Cycle Spring in 2022. Andrew used the 2022 event as a way to introduce himself to volunteers, staff and supporters following his appointment to the role of CEO.
Andrew said: “Our Cycle Spring and Autumn events are a fantastic way for people to support St Giles and raise vital funds for local people, and their loved ones, living with a terminal illness. It feels great to cycle in the company of others with a shared goal, and there’s nothing quite like crossing the finish line with all of those cycling miles under your belt!
“It’s so inspiring to see how many people from across the region turn up to cycle and raise sponsorship for St Giles, as well as to support the event on the day. I wanted to do my bit by taking part in the ride again myself this year. I’d like to thank everyone who attended this year’s event, including our volunteers who ensured the day ran smoothly, and members of the local community who came to cheer our cyclists on. St Giles simply wouldn’t be able to operate without the continued support, goodwill and collective community spirit of its fantastic supporters, and this year’s Cycle Spring has already raised over £15,000 so far – we’re so grateful.
“I’d also like to thank BikeBOT, Freedom Cycles, 2 Wheels Only and Rugeley Bicycle Repairs, who provided expert technical assistance on the day, helping to ensure our riders’ safety and attending to any last-minute mechanical hiccups with impressive skill and speed.”
Those who are ready to take on a cycling challenge themselves and raise vital funds for St Giles can look forward to their Cycle Autumn event, which takes place in just a few months’ time on Sunday 10th September 2023. The event offers three routes (‘Short’, ‘Medium’ or ‘Ultra’) and starts / finishes at St Giles Hospice, Whittington.
