Andrew Mitchell has held a new year meeting with Richard Kirby, the Chief Executive of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, to discuss formal plans for the future of Sutton’s Cottage Hospital. They were joined by the Director of Estates. The purpose of the meeting was to chart the progress of a significantly enhanced role across our community.
Andrew Mitchell has championed the Cottage Hospital becoming a much expanded resource particularly serving older folk in the Town and avoiding the use of more expensive secondary health care (like Good Hope) while ensuring people can stay in their own homes for as long as possible through using locally based medical support such as minor injury, falls clinic, heart and strokes clinic, diabetes, mental health, muscular skeletal services, incontinence and bladder clinic as well as physiotherapy, dementia and speech therapy.
The NHS has completed a review of the physical conditions of the building and Andrew Mitchell and Richard Kirby toured the inside and outside of the Cottage Hospital with the Director of Estates.
Further work assessing changes required to the fabric of the building will be completed by the end of January.
A detailed plan of works and budget is expected to be completed by the end of March this year.
Andrew Mitchell said: “I am grateful for the work and effort put into this by Richard Kirby and his colleagues at the Community Healthcare Trust to implement the vision we all share in the Royal Town of bringing back our Cottage Hospital into far more productive use.
I want to see the Cottage hospital giving a real boost to services to local people- above all ensuring the necessary support is available for elderly people to live independent lives for as long as possible in their own homes.”
