A partnership between two schools will provide an inclusive environment for learners with special educational needs.

The Map is a resourced provision based on the site of The Coleshill School, set up in partnership with Woodlands School to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment for a small number of learners with special educational needs, in particular communication and interaction needs, to support their access to a mainstream curriculum.

The Map was officially opened at a ceremony attended by Iain Paterson, headteacher of Woodlands School, and Ian Smith-Childs, headteacher of The Coleshill School, Angie Perry and Simon Smith, the chief finance and operations officers of the UNITY MAT and the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership respectively, and Dale Bromfield of Warwickshire County Council.

Mr Smith-Childs from The Coleshill School – part of the Sutton Coldfield-based Arthur Terry Learning Partnership - said: “We are so proud of this joint project with Woodlands School and Warwickshire County Council.

“With our schools so close to each other Mr Paterson and I have always wanted to create something truly special for the students in our community.  The early signs are really positive and we look forward to changing students’ lives with this new provision.”

Mr Paterson referred to feedback from the parent of the first Map pupil, which highlighted how transformative the provision has been for their child: “X is understood, valued and nurtured.

"After just four months the work and care of the staff has given me my son back. He is happy again, and his confidence is returning. He has even joined the gym!"
