Sutton Coldfield elects new mayor and deputy mayor

Councillor John Perks  has been elected as mayor, with Cllr Cindy Yip (pictured) becoming deputy mayor.

As the town’s First Citizen, it is the mayor’s responsibility to promote civic pride and help support the council’s commitment to serving local communities.

Cllr Perks has lived in Sutton Coldfield for over 50 years and has served on Sutton Coldfield Town Council between 2016-2018 and from 2022 representing the Walmley and Minworth Ward.

Cllr Cindy Yip also represents the Walmley and Minworth Ward and has served on the Council since 2022.

Councillor Perks is a Magistrate in Birmingham, a position held for nearly 14 years.

In his spare time, he enjoys photography and the green spaces around the Royal town.

He lives with his wife Sarah, a financial controller in logistics and they have two sons, Frederick and Alexander who were born and educated in Sutton Coldfield.

Sarah is Treasurer of the Walmley Residents Association.

Cllr Perks thanked the outgoing Mayor Cllr Tony Briggs and said: “I feel extremely privileged to become Mayor of Sutton Coldfield and look forward to what promises to be a memorable year ahead starting off with an event to mark the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and Civic Sunday on 9 June.

“I am proud to accept this incredible honour and to have the opportunity to serve the wonderful residents that make up this brilliant Town. I cannot wait to get out and about and meet you all!”

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Cindy Yip said: “I feel honoured to have been chosen as Deputy Mayor by my fellow Councillors and look forward to this upcoming year with pride.

“I am delighted for Cllr Perks and look forward to working with him in serving the residents of Sutton Coldfield.

“I would also like to thank the outgoing Mayor for upholding the high standards of the Council and his commitment to many remarkable community projects this past year.”
