A Sutton Coldfield store assistant has been crowned the winner of this month’s Sutton Smiles Better Award, Sutton Coldfield Town Centre BID has announced.
The initiative, now in its fifth month, shines a spotlight on a new community hero every month, whether they work in retail, hospitality or professional services.
Nominated by local shopper, Nadine Owens, this month’s shining star stood out to judges as he was spotted helping the elderly community carry shopping back to the car, during the Covid-19 outbreak.
Alex Hinton, 24 and from Sutton Coldfield, has worked at Aldi for just over a year, and was nominated for showing true community spirit at this challenging time.
In her nomination Nadine said “Aldi was very busy - queues to the back of the shop but he helped someone push their trolley to their car. A perfect example of community spirit in Sutton Coldfield!”
Alex was surprised and humbled to receive his award, he said: “I’m so happy to have been chosen for this award. It really was such a wonderful surprise.
“I’ve never seen anything like this situation in supermarkets, what we’re living through is exceptional. In years to come I will be proud to talk about how the supermarkets have handled these unique and difficult circumstances.
“I am enjoying doing what I can to help people during these unprecedented times, what’s going on really seems to have - on the whole - brought the best out in people.
“I plan to spend the vouchers I’ve won treating friends and family to a celebratory meal once this is all over.” He added.
Each month, a panel of local business representatives will select one worthy winner from the nominations, who will win £100 local vouchers as well as be able to display the Sutton Smiles Better trophy in their business for one month.
