Swansea's DVLA will begin to stop issuing tax discs by the end of this year.
The tax disc has been a fixture on car windscreens since 1921 but will no longer need to be displayed from October.
The DVLA is taking advantage of huge strides in IT to remove the need to display a disc.
The police can now check if a driver has paid road tax by using the registration number alone.
Apparently this will not have any great impact on the staffing level at the DVLA - a major employer in Swansea for many years.
Reminders will still be sent out to car owners in the usual way but we will be encouraged to complete the transaction on line.
