The West Somerset Railway originally opened in 1862 between Taunton and Watchet. It is now the longest heritage railway in England and runs over a distance of 36.6km (just short of 23 miles). For steam locomotive fans this is an absolute must.
Blake Museum in BridgwaterThe Museum is in Blake Street close to the Town Centre. The Museums namesake is Robert Blake who was Cromwell’s General at Sea, he is thought to have been born in this 16thCentury building-first mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The Museum is culturally and historically significant, and a great place to explore.
Hestercombe Gardens, Taunton, offers visitors 50 acres of parkland with lakes, temples, cascades and forest walks, terraced areas, a 17th Century Water Mill complex and magnificent views over this beautiful County. This is a wonderful venue for all ages.
Sports fans, Ladies included, will love theSomerset Crickets Museum in Taunton, home of many cricketing legends including Vic Marks, Ian Botham, Marcus Trescothick and many more. The Museum is housed at the Taunton County Ground in a 500 years old building (Grade 11 listed) which is the only remaining part of the Augustinian Priory that was seized by Henry the 8th in 1539. Close to the Town Centre the Museum is an easy walk away.
There is also a section devoted to the England women's cricket team, because the County Ground is their headquarters.
Vivary Adventure Centre, Taunton, is great for 8yrs olds plus, with a climbing wall, high ropes, and crazy golf, what a great day out for all the family. Parents and youngsters can burn off holiday energy together, fabulous fun!
Cannington Golf Centre,Bridgwater,is a nine hole, 18-tee golf course plus undercover, fully automated, floodlit driving range where non-members are welcome.Suitable for children from 4yrs to 18yrs. Great fun and maybe the start of a wonderful sporting future.
Hollywood Bowl, Heron Gate, Taunton, is ten-pin bowling for the family with starter and expert lanes. For the younger members of the family there are ball-guides to help them score. Ages from 3 upwards. Wonderful inclusive family fun regardless of the weather.
Aj'z Play and Party Centre in Taunton is a lovely bright and colourful adventure play centre with a huge play frame for children aged 4 years and above with a dedicated area for children under 4years, plus a café, free WIFI, and a large free car park.
