Somerset County Cricket Club have announced the signing Johann Myburgh for the 2014 season.
The 33 year old is a top order right hand batsman who also bowls off breaks, and is vastly experienced. He currently lives with his wife in Twickenham and has been living in the UK for a number of seasons playing for Sutton CC near London.
He has an impressive record in all formats and in his 80 first class games has scored over 5,500 runs at an average of 43.37 which includes 13 centuries and a best of 203. He has also taken 31 wickets at 44.90. Myburgh has played in 97 List A games in which he has scored 2344 runs at 28.58, including a best of 112, and taken 24 wickets.
In T20 cricket he has played in 45 games, scored 969 runs at 28.50 with a best of 88, taken 10 wickets and enjoys an economy rate of 7.48. Myburgh was a prolific run scorer while he was at school in Pretoria and broke Graham Pollocks record for the youngest scorer of a double century in South African first class cricket as a 17 year old in 1997/98.
Myburgh has played domestic first class cricket in South Africa for the Titans, and has also spent time playing in New Zealand playing for Canterbury, before appearing for Hampshire in 2011 and Durham in 2012. During his career Myburgh has also been part of various South African, and New Zealand national squads which shows his pedigree and bodes well for his times at Somerset Cricket.
Somerset Director of Cricket Dave Nosworthy said: Mybs is a quality person and a quality professional cricketer. His track record speaks for itself and I have no doubt that his experience and expertise will add massive value and depth to the team.
However he is coming to the Club with no guarantees or any expectations, so I look forward to him fighting his way into contention. I have worked with Mybs before and know what he has to offer, so look forward to him performing and also to everyone making him feel as welcome as possible."
