Want to do something with the kids?  Can’t afford to spend a fortune?  Look no further than our ideas for a local day out without breaking the bank.

Soft play for rainy days in Taunton at Space Adventures have sessions for the whole family.  From babies, toddlers, juniors and bigger kids, you can book two hours of fun which should blow off some steam when it’s wet outside.  With their innovative design and multi functional play areas plus a food and drink service direct to your table, you can give your kids a good run around while you grab a cup of coffee.  See their website for full details and we advise booking ahead of time.

Pack a picnic and go for a hike in the woods.  We are blessed with some amazing forest trails around Taunton and Bridgwater.  A day out side in the country is never wasted, fresh air, nature and fresh places to explore.  Not to mention the benefits of well exercised children, who eat well and sleep like logs after a good long walk.  Check out some trails here, with distances, time taken and directions to help you find the most suitable for your group.

Head to the park.  We have three lovely parks in Taunton, find the links and further information here.  If you don’t fancy a long hike, take a walk in the park.  Kids play areas, sports fields, room to fly a kite if it’s windy, blow some bubbles and play games with friends.  Take a frisbee, a ball, a bat if you have one, have a game of rounders if you meet up with your pals.  You can even turn up and play tennis on the courts at Vivary Park.  Most have a café where you can refresh yourselves afterwards.

Take yourself to Taunton Museum.  Entry is free (they suggest you make a donation of £3) and there is so much to see.  Click on the link here to see what events they are holding now.   There is so much to see there, something for everyone, not least The Giant’s Shoes!  The Giant’s Shoes were worn by Joseph Sewell (1805-1829) who was seven feet four inches (2.2 metres) tall and weighed 37 stone (235 kilograms.)  A collection of nine themed galleries plus the Somerset Military Museum all housed within the town’s 12th Century walls.

Meet the Alpacas at Stoke Wood.  A thirty minute Meet the Alpacas session will cost £5 per person regardless of age, with half of this money being donated to a children’s charity of the owners choice.  This must be booked in advance with Stoke Wood Alpacas, so click the link here to contact them.  Alternatively you can book a Walk with Alpacas experience which lasts about two hours (children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult) which is a very enjoyable and unique day out.  The alpacas are well trained and very gentle, making for a very special visit.
