The Wiz is a retelling of the classic story The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but with a modern twist and rooted in African-American culture. The story follows Dorothy, a young girl from Kansas, who is swept away by a tornado to the magical land of Oz. In this vibrant, fantastical world, Dorothy embarks on a journey to find the Wizard, who she believes can help her return home. Along the way, she meets three companions: the Scarecrow, who desires a brain; the Tin Man, who longs for a heart; and the Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage. Together, they navigate the challenges of Oz, encountering witches, flying monkeys, and other colourful characters, all while discovering that the qualities they seek have been within them all along. The musical’s themes emphasize self-discovery, empowerment, and the importance of home, all set against a backdrop of soulful music and dynamic dance.
