Ice or heat for muscular pain?

Many people seem confused about whether the application of heat or ice is most beneficial.

First thing to remember is that neither, if used in an appropriate manner, will cause any harm.

We generally advise using ice after injury, and also after treatment. We advise using for 10-15 minutes every hour where possible as it is the repetitive nature which has the best impact.

It is believed (according to patient.co.uk) that ice

  • reduces bleeding to tissues
  • reduces swelling and inflammation
  • reduces muscle pain and spasms
  • numbs the area

There are some contra-indications to using of ice or heat, so please do speak to a specialist before using yourself.

At the clinics we stock ice packs and biofreeze gel.
