As Chiropractors, we have to undertake regular training to fulfil our continual professional development.
Hayley's next course will be on Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Massage (IASTM).
Instrument assisted soft tissue massage (IASTM) is effective in breaking down scar tissue and fascial restrictions. It provides controlled micro-trauma to the affected tissue. Studies have shown IASTM to improve range of movement, strength and pain perception.
The design of the instruments used aids in finding these areas of scar tissue and fascial restrictions, and to then treat the affected areas at an appropriate pressure. Prior to using the instruments the muscles are treated by soft massage or stretching. The instruments are then used to scan the muscle, with appropriate force then applied to the indicated area.
It works by stimulating a local inflammatory response. It initiates the reabsorption of inappropriate fibrosis or scar tissue. This helps to remodel the soft tissue.
The science bit! Research has shown an increase in fibroblast proliferation, reduction in scar tissue, increased vascular response and remodelling of of unorganised collagen fiber matrix. Fibroblasts repair, regenerate and maintain the extra cellular matrix.
You will often notice redness to the area. This is the breakdown of capillaries which leads to small blood spots. These can remain for up to 1 week after treatment. You may also experience some areas of bruising.
Treatments are most beneficial on a weekly basis for 3-4 weeks. The extent of redness usually reduces with each treatment.
We will be looking for guinea pigs after the course, so please keep an eye on our Facebook page for details!
