Scam telephone calls reported in Telford & Wrekin

It has emerged that the individuals making the phone calls are asking local residents if they have been involved in a recent road traffic accidents.

Telford & Wrekin Council stress these calls are not from the Council, and they do not make telephone calls of this nature. All Council employees who make a call to a local resident will offer the option to phone them back to verify who they are.

The council urge anyone who receives one of these telephone calls to hang up. Absolutely do not enter in to a conversation or give out personal information.

The nuisance scam calls have been reported to Trading Standards.

The citizen advice bureau advises that if someone calls you and start to ask probing question, follow the guidelines below to avoid becoming a victim of fraud:

  • Never give out your personal details such as name, address, date of birth or bank account details. Remember they phoned you and they should in fact have access to this information.
  • Never trust someone who says you have won a prize
  • Do not ring any number you are given to claim a prize  
  • Never send money to anyone to claim a prize
  • Sign up to the free Telephone and Mailing Preference Services, which cuts down unwanted phone calls, texts and post.
  • Take the caller’s information down and pass it to Trading Standards
