Those attending ABC Day Nursery sites across the borough have been very busy in the run up to National Insect Week, which runs from June 20 to 26, by learning all about the life-cycle of a butterfly.
The initiative, organised by the Royal Entomological Society, aims to encourage people of all ages to learn more about insects and ABC children have chosen to focus their efforts on the butterfly.
Penny Hustwick, owner of ABC Day Nursery, said: “The children are really looking forward to National Insect Week and have already been doing lots of bug hunting and collecting caterpillars for their project.
“They have been busy learning about the life-cycle of a butterfly and have been sharing stories such as The Hungry Caterpillar and taking part in lots of painting activities.
“Some of our children have even made their own life-size caterpillar ready for National Insect Week.
“Throughout the week we will be encouraging the children to share with parents, grandparents and brothers and sisters all about the things they have been learning to encourage greater interest in insects and the living world.”
National Insect Week runs every two years by The Royal Entomological Society and schools, nurseries and other groups are encouraged to take part.
