Job Box (a programme run by Telford & Wrekin Council) and the Army will mark National Apprenticeship Week by hosting The Apprenticeship Show in March.
The Apprenticeship Show will showcase opportunities in the Army and civilian sectors.
The age range for apprenticeships has been removed and there is now no upper age limit, so all job seekers in the borough are encouraged to come along and take a look at what an apprenticeship can offer.
The British Army, which has over 40 different apprenticeship schemes for specialists including catering, IT, bricklaying, logistics, construction, engineering and animal care, gives paid training to all its apprentices and offers a clearly defined career path, with a good salary and regular opportunities for promotion. It also has unparalleled opportunities to travel with work and offers challenge and excitement.
Over 5,500 Army apprentices are set to complete their training this year alone and around 20,000 are currently going through the Army’s apprenticeship programmes.
Local businesses already signed up for the event include The Wrekin Housing Trust, Epson, CapGemini, NHS, Jaguar Land Rover, Carillion, TDS Academy, Fabweld, Ricoh and Grainger and Worrall.
Training providers who offer apprenticeships will also be well represented at the Show.
The Apprenticeship Show will feature hands on and interactive activities for those attending to try which will be related to a range of careers. People will be encouraged to speak to the employers to understand more about jobs in their sector and the career path they could take to access them.
Pupils in years 10, 11, 12 and 13 at schools in the borough have been invited to attend the event to find out about the apprenticeship opportunities available to them.
The Apprenticeship Show is open to anyone who might be interested in finding out about apprenticeships
The Job Box has hosted a jobs fair for the past two years and last year hosted a skills festival as well and welcomed more than 7,000 job seekers and young people to these events.
Councillor Gilly Reynolds, cabinet member for employment and skills, said: “This is a great opportunity for the Job Box to work with the Army to host this event.
“We’re hoping that the event will help to dispel some of the misconceptions around apprenticeships, for example that they are only for 16 year olds. The Army offers apprenticeships up to 32 years and many firms will consider anyone, regardless of age.
“We will have lots of local and national employers at the Apprenticeship Show with 100s of opportunities for people to apply for and find out more about.”
The Apprenticeship Show is a partnership event between Telford & Wrekin Council’s Job Box service and the Army.
The Apprenticeship Show is on Thursday 27 March 2016, at The International Centre, Telford from 10am – 7.30pm.
