Thursday, 31st July at Blists Hill Victorian Town
A Shropshire museum is holding an ‘open-day’ to showcase volunteering opportunities for steam enthusiasts. Blists Hill Victorian Town, one of the ten Ironbridge Gorge Museums, is looking to recruit new volunteers to become steam drivers at the museum.
Volunteers currently drive several steam engines at the museum and provide a wonderful spectacle for visitors of all ages. The open-air museum is home to a variety of steam-powered machines including the Trevithick Locomotive, ‘Billy’ the Wallis and Steevens Steam Roller, a replica Portable Steam Engine, the Merryweather Fire Pump and a Fielding Oil Engine.
These machines are all driven by a dedicated team of volunteers, and on Thursday, 31st July anyone who might be interested in becoming a Volunteer Steam Driver is invited to come along and find out more. There will be the chance to see the steam engines in all their glory, chat to the current volunteer drivers as well as meeting museum engineering staff and finding out what volunteering as a steam driver is all about.
Anyone who is interested in discovering more about volunteering with the museums steam engines can drop-in to the Volunteer Centre at Blists Hill Victorian Town (adjacent to the entrance building) on Thursday, 31st July between 11am and 3pm. Richard Gough, the Museum’s Volunteer Coordinator will be on-hand to answer questions and introduce existing volunteers as well as showing off the steam engines within the museum.
