What makes for a good nursery?

It can be quite challenging to look for a day nursery for your child, so to help you out, we provide some great questions, tips and advice on how to find the best nursery for your little one:

Try to visit a few different nurseries in the area - this will increase your chances of finding the nursery that meets your needs and your child’s.
Does the nursery seem friendly and inviting – are the staff welcoming?
Do the rooms and toys look clean?
Do the children look happy and occupied?
Is the nursery you are interested in registered and been regularly inspected? – there should be a copy of the registration certificate on display, if it isn’t – ask to see it.
Ask to see a copy of the latest inspection report – this will show you the strengths and weaknesses.
Find out what other parents think of the nursery – word of mouth recommendations go a long way.
Consider the policies established at the day nursery – dealing with emergencies, opening and closing times, health and safety, sickness etc.
Does the nursery have an open-door policy allowing parents to go unannounced?
What are the meal/catering options? Are the meals nutritious?
What activities do the nursery provide? Are they suitable for your child’s age?
Look at the displays on the walls – is there plenty of drawings and paintings that the children have done themselves – this shows that their creativity is valued and encouraged.
Is there a safe outdoor area where the children can play outdoors?
Will your child have a key worker?
