Some excellent advice from the RSPCA on how to minimise stress for your pet this bonfire night – click HERE for the RSPCA’s full advice page
Talk to your vet about pheromone diffusers, or prescribed medication
Make sure your dog or cat always has somewhere to hide
During the firework season make sure you walk your dog during daylight hours
After dark, shut all windows, close the curtains and leave music playing to mask outside bangs and flashes
If your pet shows signs of fear, try to ignore their behaviour
Never punish or fuss over your pet when it is scared
Make sure your cat or dog is always kept in a safe and secure environment and can’t escape or injure itself
Don’t forget small animals such as birds, rabbits and guinea pigs – partly cover cages or aviaries with a thick blanket & give them extra bedding to hide in
Horses area also very vulnerable – if the display is near your field bring them in if possible – leave stable lights on and turn the radio up – if left out make sure Fields are safe and fences are secure & plainly visible at night - if at all possible BE there!
Speak to your vet in advance about sedation if you know you are likely to have a problem.
