Soon to be in its fourth year, and kindly sponsored by Conister, the ACE scheme gives free access to all MNH attractions for all Isle of Man schoolchildren up to 18 years of age in full time education. Two winning designs are selected to feature on the front of the ACE cards issued via the schools by the Department of Education and Children. This year, Conister sponsored eight competition prize categories where the top prizes are worth £100 of art supplies for the winning primary and secondary schools. Winning individuals will also receive a cash prize from Conister plus goodies from the Manx Heritage Shop. The 2013 editions of the cards featuring the new winning designs will be distributed to 12,500 Manx school children and students before December. Students can continue to use their current ACE cards until end of December. Tim Crookall MHK, Minister for Education and Children, who was also one of the judges, said: 'It was a pleasure to be invited to judge this competition, which has an important part in our calendar. Entries were, as always, of a very high standard and young people had all different kinds of imaginative interpretations of their Island.' 'I would like to thank Manx National Heritage and Conister Bank for their ongoing support for this superb scheme, which makes it easy for our young people to access and learn about their cultural heritage, and for their kindness in providing the winning artists and their schools with such generous prizes.' After a hard task of judging more than 400 entries, the winners were announced. Winner of the Secondary School category is Megan Rossiter, age 14, from Ballakermeen High School with an eye-catching graphic drawing featuring the TT and Fairy Bridge. The under 12s category was awarded to Aaron Fitzmaurice, age 10 from Kewaigue School with a colourful drawing of the Laxey Wheel. The winners and runners up will be invited to a prize presentation on 1st October where they will get a special opportunity to see the learn about the development of MNH's brand new animation to advertise the ACE scheme. Edmund Southworth, Director of Manx National Heritage said: "Earlier on this year, Manx National Heritage set a project to a team of professional animators to come up with a short animation that encompassed Manx history and would engage children and teens alike. Animators Juan Moore, Steve Garry, Chloe Dawe with artist Carol Butler and guitarist Steve Breslin worked on the animation which involved over three months of work, 3000 drawings and a uniquely composed soundtrack. We were extremely impressed by the work undertaken on the animation team who had a wealth of experience under their belt including work on Oscar nominated animation 'Chico and Rita' ". Featuring some comical characters and history we are all familiar with, Manx National Heritage hope the new animation will be a big hit with audiences.
