On Tuesday evening, Douglas Market Hall hosted an exhibition on Manx history and heritage by Isle of Man College students. The event was attended by the Mayor and Mayoress of Douglas and other invited guests. Thirty posters were displayed, each of them exploring a different aspect of the Island’s past.

The posters are the work of students taking the College’s Introduction to the Isle of Man course. The course covers a wide range of topics including the geology and archaeology of the Island, its history, its built and natural environments, and its language, literature, and folklore. Sessions are taught by specialists in each subject area.

Course Leader, Dr Catriona Mackie, said “This exhibition showcases the remarkable achievements of students who have been enrolled for less than four months. The poster project was designed to encourage students to be creative and to research a topic that they’re especially interested in. We’ve got posters which shed new light on familiar topics, such as the MER, Cashtal yn Ard, and Balladoole, as well as those on more unusual themes, such as the decline in Manx pubs, prehistoric stone tools, and Jinny the Witch.”

Andrea, a student on the course, explained “Introduction to the Isle of Man is a must for anyone wanting to find out about the rich and diverse history and culture that the Island has. I have lived here for twenty-five years and am finding so much information I didn't know, not just about the history I thought I knew but all aspects of the Island from early Man to the geology of the Island. Also, you meet like-minded people who become fast friends.”

Professional illustrator, Professor Jo Davies of the Isle of Man College and University of Plymouth said “The posters display some really creative and innovative responses to traditional and new themes in Manx history and culture. Each poster has its own distinctive style reflecting the depth of research and each individual’s unique approach to the subject.”

Next year, the College will be offering two stand-alone courses on Manx history and heritage. Introduction to the Isle of Man will be running again, along with a course exploring the History of the Isle of Man: AD 979 to the Present. The College also offers a full-time and part-time BA (Hons) degree in History & Heritage. Further information about these courses and the BA degree can be found on the Isle of Man College website, or by emailing HEAdmin@iomcollege.ac.im
