Jon Joughin, who won the Douglas East by-election in November 2015, joins Chris Thomas MHK and Michael Coleman MLC as a member of the Department of Home Affairs.

His appointment has been agreed by the Council of Ministers.

Minister Juan Watterson said: ‘I am delighted that Mr Joughin has accepted my invitation to become part of the team at Home Affairs.

‘He will support a variety of projects in the months ahead to gain an insight into the department and its role in supporting government’s national priorities.’

The police, fire and rescue service, prison and probation service, emergency communications and emergency planning fall under the umbrella of Home Affairs.

Mr Joughin said: ‘Home Affairs makes an important contribution to the quality of life we enjoy in the Isle of Man by providing services that help communities to feel safe, protected and secure.

‘I am looking forward to gaining an understanding of life in the department and to working with the minister, members and officers for the benefit of local people.’

Most members of Tynwald are members of departments. As such, they get a 30 per cent rise in their £38,771 salaries.
