He shouted at the staff and used the knife to threaten the shop assistant in order to open the till. The staff member co-operated and the offender fled with about £500 in cash.

The offender is described as about six feet tall, white with a chubby build he was wearing a dark body warmer, a dark long sleeve top and what is believed to be grey or blue jogging bottoms.

He concealed his face with a mask.

Detective Sergeant Bobby Syme said: ‘This offence is obviously worrying for the public and a very alarming method of offending, but thankfully there were no serious physical injuries to the lady who cooperated with the offenders instructions.

‘We are keen to speak to anyone who was in the vicinity of the Spar shop between 9.15pm and 9.45 pm on Saturday night or anyone who may have been in the shop at around the time of this offence.

‘A male has been arrested in connection with this offence and is currently being questioned by officers, but this is by no means conclusive so I again appeal to the public for any information which may assist the investigation.

The public is likely to see extra patrols in and around such shops and police say this is to reassure them while investigations continue.
