Mec Vannin Wants A New Name For Police Force And Chief

What do you think, should we change the name from the Isle of Man Constabulary, and what would you change it to?

Mec Vannin has called for the Manx police force to change its name.

It’s currently officially the Isle of Man Constabulary.

The nationalists accuse the island’s police of a ‘neo-colonial mentality’.

They acknowledge that the force stopped importing the ‘mandatory’ chief constable from England when Gary Roberts was appointed to the role.

Mec Vannin’s annual general meeting said the Manx force ‘persists in a projection of itself which makes it appear like a “quasi-English County police force”’.

It suggests that the force should be renamed The Manx Police Service (Sherveish Meoiryn Shee Vannin).

It also wants the title Chief Constable, which ‘also personifies links to the United Kingdom’, to be changed to Commissioner of Police for the Isle of Man (Barrantagh Meoiryn Shee Vannin).
