Juan Turner MLC has been sacked from his political role within the Department of Infrastructure.

Mr Turner says he spoke to DOI Minister Phil Gawne yesterday and agreed to go. He's been an outspoken critic of recent decisions by the DOI.

Mr Turner said: 'I've taken a 30 per cent pay cut. I could not support the department's policies.'

Mr Gawne confirmed that Geoff Corkish MLC would be taking over the role.

Mr Gawne said: 'I would say that from Mr Turner's perspective he has always had serious concerns about elements of departmental policy. There was a general view if he continued to make derogatory comments about the department it should be from outside rather than inside.

'I have a lot of legislation coming up and need somebody who is playing with the team.'

Mr Turner has lambasted the DOI over recent decisions.

He said: 'As a member of the department, I didn't know anything about the marina silt extraction until somebody from Peel rang to ask what was going on. The silt should have been dumped at sea. It's barmy to dig a big hole. It's not strategic thinking.

'I objected to the nonsensical parking situation at the airport. I object to town centre parking and have spoken out about that. I think town centre parking should be free.

'We had a scheme for the prom all decided and it was changed to come up with this shared space scheme. I think it's dreadful.'
