The search is on for the Isle of Man’s most inspirational - and unsung - young people.

The inaugural Young Citizen of the Year Awards from Isle of Man Newspapers and sponsored by Manx Telecom aims to reward under-18s who make an outstanding contribution to the community in a range of fields.

We’re confident that the award winners and nominees will inspire and encourage the next generation of young citizens to follow their example

The eight categories are: advocacy, arts and culture, environmentalism, leadership, peer support, perseverance, volunteering and sportsmanship.

The top three nominees will be selected by a judging panel from Isle of Man Newspapers and Manx Telecom.

The three finalists in each of the eight categories will be published in the Isle of Man Examiner, where our readers will vote for the winner. In addition to receiving a Young Citizen of the Year trophy, each of the eight winners will be presented with a 4G smartphone.

Isle of Man Newspapers’ Sally-Ann Maiden explained the idea behind the awards.

She said: ‘It’s easy for young people to get an unfair reputation because of a tiny minority, but there are so many hardworking, inspirational young people out there who make a massive contribution to life in the Isle of Man.

‘We especially want to hear about youngsters whose work goes unnoticed. There are some who act as carers for members of their families, and others who go out of their way to help the vulnerable or people with disabilities both at school and in the community. We want to give them the recognition they deserve.’

Voirrey Barron, marketing communications manager at Manx Telecom, said: ‘It’s an excellent initiative and a great way to reward and celebrate the contribution which young people are making to island life.

‘We’re confident that the award winners and nominees will inspire and encourage the next generation of young citizens to follow their example.’

To nominate someone, fill out the form in today’s Isle of Man Examiner and return it to Young Citizen of the Year Awards, Isle of Man Newspapers. European House, Peel Road, Douglas IM1 5ED, or contact us by email at sally-ann.maiden@newsiom.co.im
