Rare Super Blood Moon And Lunar Eclipse Early Monday

A rare super blood moon and a total lunar eclipse will occur at the same time for the first time in 30 years in the early hours of Monday.

The Isle of Man’s famed dark skies status could make this one of the best places in the British Isles to see the event.

At 2am on Monday, as the moon will be unusually close to the earth and look bigger and brighter than usual it will be a super moon.

Within an hour, the earth will cross between the sun and the moon in a total lunar eclipse.

Then, at about 4.30am, the moon will be fully visible again and it should have a red glow from the earth’s shadow.

The Isle of Man has 26 offically designated Dark Sky sites and has featured in an article in the BBC’s Sky at Night magazine.

The island has the largest concentration of Dark Sky Discovery sites in the British Isles.

A number of the sites have tourist information boards explaining what can be seen in the night sky from that particular location.

Light pollution means 85 per cent of the British population don’t experience a truly dark sky but astronomers in the Isle of Man benefit from a low population density and relatively few built up areas.

Some online conspiracy theorists claim passages in the Bible suggest the rare super blood moon will trigger the apocalypse but a NASA spokesman said: There is no existing evidence that an asteroid or any other celestial object is on a trajectory that will impact Earth.
