Ten intrepid Isle of Man marathoners and half marathoners completed ASICS Manchester Marathon on Sunday 10th April and raised funds for The Children’s Centre. Over 12,000 runners took to the streets of Greater Manchester and there was a new finish this year at the Emirates Old Trafford Lancashire County Cricket Stadium.

Lisa Motley, Endurance Events Fundraiser at The Children’s Centre, who travelled to Manchester with the group said:

“ASICS Manchester Marathon is the UK’s fastest, flattest and friendliest marathon and really enjoyable for both runners and spectators. It’s great to see all the runners finishing and receiving their medals. This is the second year I have taken a group of Manx runners to take part in this amazing event, which for the last two years has been voted as the UK’s Best Marathon. Our group of runners all did brilliantly – well done all of you - and thanks to the kind support of The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company who helped out with the travel costs, we will have raised over £3,500, money that will go directly to supporting children and families across the Island.”

The Manx marathoners all finished the 26.2 mile course, four of them completed the full marathon distance for the first time and two half marathoners completed the 13.1 mile distance also for the first time.

The ten runners were Rob Sellors, aged 49, from Port Erin; Terri Salmon, aged 54, from Douglas; Geoff Rice, aged 48, from Peel; Moira Hall, aged 65, from Peel; Allan Gage, aged 53, from Douglas; Peter Callin, aged 42, from Onchan; Carl Brooks, aged 27, from Onchan; Kirsty Arnold, aged 30, from Port Erin; Georgie Cosgrove, aged 47, from Sandygate; and Gemma Johnson, aged 35, from Andreas.

The finishing times are as follows for the marathon:Rob Sellors, 2:58:00; Geoff Rice, 3:16:41; Allan Gage, 3;51:54; Kirsty Arnold, 3;54:35; Peter Callin, 4:09:04; Terri Salmon, 4:25:59; Carl Brooks, 4:59:59; Moira Hall, 5:00:41; and for the half marathon: Gemma Johnson, 2:25:08; and Georgie Cosgrove, 2:37:07.

The Children’s Centre will be offering the same package again next year for ASICS Manchester Marathon 2017. This includes travel to and from the Island and minibus, entry fee, accommodation and training advice, which enables the runners to concentrate on their training and getting ready for the big day.

It costs £3000 every day to deliver the life changing services that The Children’s Centre offers. The money this event raises could pay for 6 young people to take part in our Adventure Therapy Programme and help them build confidence and life skills. Investing in our children makes a positive difference to our whole Island.
