The winner of a TT race in 1922 will make a guest appearance back in the Isle of Man this week at the Manx Classic Sprint and Hill Climb.
The three litre, eight cyclinder Sunbeam racing car finished first in the island’s last ever TT event for cars, with a winning time of five hours, 24 minutes and 50 seconds, covering eight laps, or 302 miles at an average speed of 55.78mph.
The race took place in terrible weather conditions described by French driver Jean Chassagne as ‘a nightmare in a sea of mud’.
Manx Classic event co-ordinator Shely Bryan said: ‘It’s wonderful to see this famous racing car back in the Isle of Man. The island has a unique place in not just two but also four-wheel motorsport history and to watch this car drive on the very same roads it raced on over 90 years ago is fantastic. We want to thank the owner for bringing the car back to the island.’
The car was originally designed by Sunbeam general manager Louis Coatalen and was specially modified for the 1922 event. In 1925 it went to New Zealand where it also competed before being acquired by the Donington Grand Prix collection. It was completely restored before its return to the UK in 1992. The current owner bought the car in 2009.
The Manx Classic event attracts up to 100 Edwardian, vintage, classic and modern cars. Action on Friday is Creg Willey’s hill climb, Glen Helen, roads close 9am to 5pm.
