It is a lovely little place full of local stuff of interest and with a lovely little if not slightly expensive cafe there. been many times with work and seen more than most people get to. Lots of activities for the kid to do but check first they are on and they can make stuff to take home and a small shop. Best combine visit to other local stuff on the day. there are many local manufactures of leather stuff in Walsall who would happily show you around some of them with royal approval and international status like Ettinger leather to name but one

This museum tells the story of the leather trade in Walsall, with good information boards and displays of leather items, particularly saddlery.. Opportunity to produce a leather fob for a key ring, and an entertaining former worker telling stories of his experiences. And it's free!

It was an amazing visit finding out how leather put Walsall on the map world wide. And still does to this day. The boards were very interesting to read and to keep the children happy they can do a quiz for a prize at the end. There were two activities taking place when we went firstly make you own badge and also design your own keyring. It's not the biggest site but it's ample for a few hours. There was a tea room inside but we didn't use it. Carpark is near and is only £1.50 for two hours. We were there for 2 hours.

Very interesting and good for the young to see local history of the town they're from.
Were able to try minor procedures and make a few items for themselves.

A little GEM in the heart of Walsall .
I was taken back to the days of leather production , which was a key product for the area.
The staff were engaging and explained the history and the significance of the leather industry.
I liked the hands on nature of the museum as well as the exhibits.

Museum is free, tour is free, all about the history and practice of making leather and leather goods, typically handbags and horse saddles and associated gear. Best to book as they sometimes have school trips if you dont want to share your tour with 45 of the little darlings. Some machinery to see but none is working. You can make your own leather embossed key fob if you wish. 10 mins walk from station, Walsall college of food next door and highly recommended for lunch.

Called in , just to have a look! What a little gem! Very helpful staff, and lots of history. If you go, be sure to pick up the “events and activities” brochure, as it lists many activity lessons, not just leathercraft. This will enable you to book any lessons that take your interest. Really interesting couple of hours....and it’s free....please support this museum. Thank you.

Visited today and there was a craft workshop for children to make cardboard animals which was very enjoyable. Afterwards we visited the main museum where my daughter was thrilled with the rocking horse that she was able to ride and my son enjoyed reading all about the leather museum and exploring the displays. Tey both enjoyed dressing up but the main thing they were pleased with was the keyrings.Fr an unbelievable 60p they were able to personalise their own keyring, choosing thei own metal stamp to emboss onto the leather. The staff were so lovely and helpful and they both thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The gift shop is also reasonably priced. We are thrilled to have visited today. A truly invaluable, educational experience. Thanks so much!

Well, loved the old buildings, real history! Loved the little shop, loved the little but lasting impression made on my own leather key-fob. Very interested to find out that a long time ago we made things in Britain, can it be true? Love the caretaker who had time for us, despite our late arrival. Loved the fact that it pissed down with rain while we in there and the roof never leaked, top luck. Great displays and information and just enough to learn but not overwhelm. Great experience all round, well worth looking in when in Walsall. Bonussed up by being funded with taxes, now that's novel not wasting it on some vanity project. Love you leather heroes of the Midlands past. XXX

I visited with my one and half year old son and was worried he wouldn't be interested, but there were plenty of things for him to do. We did a egg hunt, he rode on a rocking horse, did jigsaws, dressed up, made a badge and keyring. He loved it. I will definitely be bringing him back again soon. I can't believe it was free and wouldn't mind paying a little for entry. The staff were so friendly and helpful and the facilities were clean and tidy. There also was a good selection of toys / items from the shop all for good prices. I would recommend.

We have just returned from Walsall leather museum .Our two grandchildren did the craft session this morning , making a peacock for £1 each with all materials included . We wandered round museum afterwards reading its history and finding 8 hidden eggs for a prize at the end ! The children made a gold embossed leather key ring for 60p each . All the staff are really lovely and helpful . The toilets are clean and tidy and hot drinks are available from reception . It’s free to look round so a win win morning out for the Easter break .

We visited as a small group. The staff were friendly and really helpful. The museum is a great place to learn about the history of the leather trade in Walsall as well as some of the history of Walsall itself.

Upstairs retired leather workers give a real insight into working with leather and there is an opportunity to make either a key fob (60p) or a book mark (£1.00).

We spent just under two hours here and parked just over the road in a pay and display car park

We visited Walsall Leather Museum today and had a brilliant time. We enjoyed our guided tour which discused things like the history of the museum, the development of handbags throughout the decades, where leather comes from and an age appropriate explanation of the process from animal to product. This was then followed by a workshop where young and old got to choose a stamp to emboss a leather keyring to take home. In our final workshop we got to make dragons or Viking purses, there were charges for this which were an absolute bargain for the skill we learned and the product we got at the end. Staff were lovely throughout the entire museum, happy to help and share information, answer questions. Once he workshops were finished we were free to wonder round the museum and gardens at our leisure and browse in the gift shop, where it was good to find products that had been made right there in the museum itself, including Wendy's gorgeous selection of purses and other small leather goods. It's an absolute gem of a museum, I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Took my Mum here for an early Mother's day out. Very friendly staff/volunteers.
Paul the leather craftsman was there since it was Friday, he took the time to talk with us and left us with a very memorable experience!

The Museum is free but I recommend giving them a donation and having a look at their shop as it is potentially under threat, needs to be kept open as it is part of Walsall.

We greatly enjoyed our homeschool visit to the Leather Museum. The Curator, Mr David Mills, was very helpful and enthusiastic in helping us put together a suitable programme of activities for a wide range of ages (5 - 13yos), and the older children particularly enjoyed their maths/history session on code-breaking with Garry, one of their volunteer teachers.
The Museum is highly engaging with plenty of hands-on activities for the very young and not-so-young. Each session was pitched at just the right level for the children in that group and the staff leading the sessions were knowledgeable and clearly enjoyed their work.
We highly recommend the Leather Museum for an interesting and educational day-out and hope they will continue to go from strength to strength!

Free entry. Easy parking. Quite a small place so easy to fit in with other things. There was a large group present so I didn't get to see the live speaker, who sounded great. So I'm going back, as the quality of the speaker would probably move this museum up from average to excellent. So I'd recommend you check, they have someone in, which they appear to have most days. Local leather items in the shop. What a heritage area, with "everything for the horse"!

and visit this fascinating museum. We spent a happy couple of hours here, learning all about leather and the history of the trade in Walsall. I didn't realise that they still make saddles in Walsall which are exported all over the world. We only made leather key rings with metal dies and foil, which was great fun. Entry is free, donations welcome. There is a lovely garden alongside, perfect for a picnic in the Summer.
