Walsall continued from where they left off last Tuesday at Leeds with another win against Brentford at the Banks's Stadium at the weekend. On a very heavy pitch, Walsall found it hard going in the first half with very little in attack but it came as a shock after 16 minutes when the visitors took the lead through Charlie Mc Donald.
The first half was really a dour midfield scramble with not much pattern of play from either side but the gloom was lifted on 34 minutes when Darren Byfield on his recall to the side burst down the right and sent over an inviting ball for the unmarked Alex Nicholls who drilled home in the box with a well struck shot which gave the keeper no chance. It was reward for the hard working striker who has tried to get a run in the team all season and now is doing so well in the four games since his recall.
The second half saw Walsall a lot more with it and producing more attacks. Richard Taundry had one chance but sent the ball high into the stand. Byfield got into good positions in front of goal but failed to find the net.The winning goal came in the 82nd minute when Alex Nicholls crossed perfectly for Troy Deeney to produce a classic diving header and bag his 11th goal of the season. There was never any danger of Saddlers slipping up to ensure another 3 points to take them up to 9th in the table.
