When having a new carpet fitted you will often be asked if you require underlay.
Underlay is material laid under a carpet for protection or support. It is advisable to get new carpet underlay when you have new carpets fitted.
The benefits of good underlay include:
-Underfloor Comfort
-Helps absorb the pressure of feet traffic and wear
-Helps with insulation and warmth
-Can smooth out floor imperfections and can reduce flattening
If you keep your old underlay you may find it will:
-Reduce carpet life
-Will not give carpet adequate support and may cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly
-Feel hard and uncomfortable
There are different types of underlay available depending upon the room in which the carpet will be laid. Sponge rubber is the most popular underlay which is great for comfort and is available in flat or waffle patterns. For stairs and landing, crumb rubber might be more suitable as this is flat and dense so good fit over stair nosing which helps with carpet wear.
